In busy neighborhoods of Nairobi, Mombasa, and Kisumu, construction sites begin buzzing before sunrise. Among the first to arrive are women carrying thermos flasks of hot uji, mandazi, and tea\u2014providing affordable breakfast to fundis and casual laborers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For many of these women, hawking uji at \u201cmijengo\u201d is not just business\u2014it is survival. Yet, the work comes with complex challenges, particularly when dealing with predominantly male clientele.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Unwanted Advances and Verbal Harassment<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Construction sites are often male-dominated spaces. Some women report facing flirtatious comments, teasing, or persistent personal questions. While not all clients behave inappropriately, even a few uncomfortable interactions can make the work environment stressful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
